SYNOPSIS of AXIS RISING: For the first two years of World War II, before Pearl Harbor, the three Axis powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan, were expanding and consolidating empires abroad. Nine rare documentary films in this Battleground collection retrace an enthralling tale of the Axis Rising, as Germany sweeps across Europe, Italy invades Ethiopia, and Japan occupies China and Manchuria, setting its sights on the sneak attack that it hoped would cripple U.S. power. SYNOPSIS of BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC: Winston Churchill invented an enduring name for the clash between Allied merchant ships and escorts and Germany's deadly submarines, mines, and surface vessels. Churchill needed huge imports of food, fuel, and raw materials; Nazis needed to prevent Britain's use as a base for air strikes or invasion. The Battleground series re-creates the critical campaign to save Britain from starvation. SYNOPSIS of BATTLE OF BRITAIN: Britain's finest hour came in the early summer of 1940, as Nazi Germany readied plans to invade the one part of Europe it did not yet control. But the Royal Air Force, like the British people, rose to the occasion, withstanding the terrible bombardment by the Luftwaffe. Battleground: The Battle of Britain recounts those momentous months in a two-disc set, including brief histories of the RAF and British naval aviation. SYNOPSIS of GERMAN FRONTIER: From the Siegfried Line to the final remaining bridge at Remagen, Allied forces fought valiantly to liberate Europe from the Nazi menace in 1944 and 1945. Hopes for an early surrender were dashed by German resistance in the last-ditch Battle of the Bulge. Battleground: The German Frontier recounts the final months of bloody struggle after the Normandy invasion, as Allied ground forces neared Berlin. SYNOPSIS of NORTH AFRICA & TALY: Allied forces, facing a German-controlled Mediterranean, were forced to liberate North Africa before invading Europe. British forces struggled mightily to defeat Italian forces, then Germany's Afrika Corps, before invading Italy and toppling Mussolini, weakest link in the Axis chain. Battleground: North Africa and Italy chronicles the arduous Allied battles for El Alamein, Sicily, Salerno, and the final breakthroughs at Cassino and Anzio. SYNOPSIS of PACIFIC OCEAN: Without aircraft carriers, the Allies had no hope of defeating Japan in the Pacific. Before Pearl Harbor, the United States had just 8 carriers; that number grew to nearly 100 by 1945. The Fast Carrier Task Force became the main Allied striking force against Japan, achieving parity and then obliterating enemy air power in a final push. Battleground: Southwest Pacific re-creates the mighty struggle by Allied forces, led by General Douglas MacArthur, to force the Japanese back. SYNOPSIS of WINGS OVER EUROPE: Wings Over Europe reveals how Germany awakened a sleeping giant by declaring war on the United States. The sudden, all-out U.S. effort to rearm itself astonished Nazi observers, as American military leaders quickly produced war materials and trained thousands of pilots, bombardiers, and navigators for the long siege in Europe's skies. The Battleground series presents 8 films from the first B-17 missions to final Allied superiority in 1944-45.
